Hands-On Learning Experience

Course Content and Structure

The curriculum covers all aspects essential for becoming a proficient yoga teacher, from yoga philosophy and anatomy, to sequencing and teaching methodology.

My Vinyasa Practice 200-hour YTT is split into eight modules, each meticulously crafted to provide a well-rounded understanding of yoga’s rich tapestry.

  1. History and Foundations of Vinyasa Yoga. Incorporating the Yoga Sutras, Samadhi Pada, Chitta Vrtti, the history and mythology of yoga, lineage, psychology, and more.

  2. Living Your Karma Through Your Dharma. Further foundational education, including Sadhana Pada, the Gunas, Eight Limbs of Yoga, ethics of teaching, and a special inclusivity series that focuses on teaching to diverse demographics, including BIPOC and LGBTQIA+

  3. Understanding the Pancha Maya Kosha System. This section covers Vibhuti Pada, Kaivalya Pada, energetic blockages within the body, and the Pancha Maya kosha system, among the rest.

  4. Anatomy, Mechanics, and Sequencing. Along with in-depth anatomy of the spine and shoulder, the fourth section examines Tantra Yoga, Ayurveda, and Ashtanga Primary Series.

  5. Integrating Mind and Body. Diving deeper into Hatha, the course progresses into deeper understanding of proprioception and orientation in asana, sequencing grounded in anatomical understanding, and common modifications.

It briefly touches on the chakras and nadis, the subtle bodies, kriya and bandha.

  6. The Veils that Blind Us. Section six delves into the kleshas, lines of energy, common injuries, alignments and adjustments.

  7. Chakras and Specializing Sequences. Sequencing for diverse populations, facilitating self-awareness, and subtle body sequencing take center stage.

  8. Introduction to Specialized Practices. The ultimate section introduces various types of yoga for special populations, including trauma-informed, adaptive, prenatal, yin, yoga nidra, and restorative yoga.

I learned about adaptive anatomy and alignment and applied that directly to my work with the veteran population. It also includes a breakdown of the yoga business.

Practicum and Yoga Alliance Certification

The program culminates with the practicum and certification, which makes you eligible for Yoga Alliance membership.

The formal assessment includes a learning lab and personal practice log, a community involvement log, a final essay touching upon all aspects of learning in the course, teaching a karma class, and a final exam. Upon completing these assignments, the student is fully certified and can become a RYT with Yoga Alliance.

Course Timeline

It took me four months to attain my 200-hour YTT certification. While it could be completed in less time, I reviewed the material frequently and replayed sections to deepen my understanding.

Conversely, someone with a busy schedule could take their time to complete all of the coursework for this training program without undue pressure.

Knowing this, My Vinyasa Practice delivers content in bite-size pieces, allowing students to spend as little as 5-10 minutes on a video or reading section, which they could return to later.

There were days when I could spend 3-4 hours learning and finish an entire section, and other times I only had time or bandwidth to watch a five-minute video. Overall, it balanced well with my other responsibilities.

Study Format

The first eight sections of this 200-hour yoga teacher training include pre-recorded lectures, worksheets, and learning labs.

Each learning lab contains several lectures that further explore the topics covered in each course module.

The training felt considerate to all types of learners.

The writing was excellent and complemented the videos, as I am a learner who often absorbs material better from reading. Additionally, all videos had accessibility features (closed captions and audio controls).

Educational Resources

The course also provides a complete manual, with detailed written descriptions and images that extensively cover sequencing, anatomy, yoga philosophy, and subtle bodies.

The option to download a digital copy or order a hard copy of the manual was a nice bonus. I found the hard copy helpful when I practiced or studied at home.

In contrast, the digital copy allowed me to continue learning on the go. The manual was incredibly detailed and expanded upon the topics covered in the course.

Worksheets, available for download or viewing within the platform, also accompany each module, allowing students to use the materials as part of their practice.

Additionally, the MVP School App allowed me to learn on-the-go, meaning I could access my curriculum while working in the morning or taking a walk in the evening.

Technical Overview

Having recently moved to a new platform, the courses integrate homework and feedback directly within the platform.

The move to the new platform has been relatively seamless, with open communication, an online help centre with updated articles that explain platform differences, and live assistance from peer support.

The videos and educational content provided by My Vinyasa Practice are clean and well-organized and provide a natural progression through the courses. Many of the videos have been newly recorded to ensure higher-quality audio and resolution while providing updated information.

All assignments are either directly located in the platform, providing immediate grading for quizzes, or involve uploading directly to the platform, with clear instructions on uploading paper or video assignments.

Platform Design and Accessibility

The learning platform has a simple user interface characterized by a clean aesthetic. Without compromising quality, I could move through modules at my speed, reviewing material, re-watching videos for improved comprehension.

The accessibility of My Vinyasa Practice teacher certification was a bonus; I found the inclusiveness, consideration of differing students’ schedules and backgrounds, and diversity highly appealing.

Additionally, video lectures were optimized with closed captions and audio settings for deaf students or people with audio processing disorders.

Yoga Teacher Training Faculty

My Vinyasa Practice Reviews

My Vinyasa Practice offers a variety of YTT courses, in addition to this 200-hour program.

Suffice it to say, the trainers and course designers have a ton of experience in delivering classes, working with different types of students, and educating the future generations of aspiring yoga teachers.

  • Michelle Young is the founder of My Vinyasa Practice, in addition to being an E-RYT500 and an IAYT-certified Yoga Therapist. With an M.Ed in Curriculum Development, lead trainer Michelle understands how to deliver information clearly, in an authentic and embodied way.

  • Maire McGlasson is an E-RYT500 who uses her expertise to deliver Hatha lectures throughout this course.
  • Ana Pilar Cruz is an E-RYT500 and C-IAYT. She is a dedicated Viniyoga student and the director of a 200-hour online Tantra teacher training.

  • Dr. Charryse Johnson is a psychotherapist and holistic wellness advocate who collaborated with My Vinyasa Practice to design their inclusivity modules (teaching yoga to LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC).

Direct Support

My Vinyasa Practice has an outstanding peer support team, available 24/7 to answer questions or concerns.

I was able to receive a response to any questions I had within 24 hours, and any corrections were implemented almost immediately.

The online 200-hour teacher training also includes direct contact with the lead trainers, with office hours allocated for trainee support every week.

Personal Experience and Impact

My Vinyasa Practice Reviews

Flexibility and Comprehension

The flexible nature of the 200-hour teacher training is what initially drew me to the course.

I was searching for a hybrid learning format that would allow me to move at my own pace, and this program offered that at an affordable price.

With videos, lectures, written content, online workshops, a complete manual, and check-ins for each module, I found material retention and comprehension much easier to manage.

Giving myself space and time for reflection allowed the training to become a truly transformative experience, where I learned to value listening to my own body and respecting what I needed from the training each day.

Sense of Community

The transparency and warmth I saw at the My Vinyasa Practice community made the online learning experience feel as though it was in-person.

Plus, the office hour schedule accommodated different time zones and schedules, offering multiple opportunities to connect.

Confidence and Competence

Even though I had already completed training as a yoga teacher when I set off on the 200-hour YTT with My Vinyasa Practice, this program really encouraged my growth and self-improvement.

The 200-hour teacher training strengthened my foundations of yoga and expanded my knowledge in areas I had yet to realize were lacking.

For instance, this course gave me a better understanding of the yoga sutras, kosha body system, the doshas, and the applications of how these can fundamentally impact an individual’s practice.

Before my online training, I felt little confidence in teaching an all-level yoga class, always afraid that I would offer too much or too little.

After learning the types of modifications, adjustments, and sequence blocks, I now feel confident and have the teaching skills to tailor my classes to make them more approachable, adaptable, and aware of student needs and differences.

I felt more capable as a teacher and could incorporate this learning into my work with veterans and military populations.

Online vs In-Person Yoga Teacher Training

My Vinyasa Practice Reviews

With this training, I was in a unique position to compare my previous experience (in-person YTT I completed in 2018) with a 200-hour program that took place 100% online.

Some new trainees may worry how the quality of education and a sense of community can be derived from online training.

Frequent concerns include a need for hands-on training, the actual course content, a schedule in online training, and the quality of the instructors.

However, my personal experience strongly indicates that online training is the same as in-person: it is what you make it.

I found that My Vinyasa Practice addressed all these concerns directly. While hands-on training is not offered online, I was given frequent opportunities to instruct classes to fellow students during scheduled training sessions.

As for the rest, I received a more in-depth training and immersive experience with this remote training versus the in-person. The scope of material covered in My Vinyasa Practice training was more profound than during my in-person training.

Cons

  • Self-paced learning might be difficult for those who have trouble focusing or do not have an optimal learning environment.
  • Making your own schedule can be a struggle for some students as it places responsibility on you to make time for learning.
  • Places responsibility on you to find direct contact teaching experience by making arrangement with other students.
  • Potential employers may not see online YTT as authentic yoga teacher training.

Overall, My Vinyasa Practice online training provided more features that worked with my learning style and allowed me to create my schedule, whereas the in-person training expected my schedule to fit with the studio.

In Conclusion

My Vinyasa Practice offers a 200-hour yoga teacher training online based on a holistic approach to yoga education.

It combines a comprehensive curriculum, expert instruction, incredible study materials, and a supportive community to empower aspiring teachers in their personal yoga practice and professional excellence journey.

This 200-hour online program with My Vinyasa Practice paved a new path for personal development for me as a practitioner and yoga teacher, allowing me to expand my foundational understanding of yoga practice and incorporate healing movement into my work.

Although this course was the most affordable teacher trainings I could find, it sacrificed little regarding quality, content, and support.

Additionally, this yoga teacher training guided me further in working with the veteran population, teaching me how to adapt sequencing in classes for diverse populations.

Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned practitioner, this program provides all the tools and guidance for you to thrive as a professional in yoga teaching.
