Breathwork & Ice Bath Workshop Review
The BreathingCold Essential Experience is a journey into self-discovery unlike any other I’ve taken. Set amidst the serene rice fields of Ubud, Bali just an 8-minute walk behind Room4Desert, this two-day workshop was about more than just breathwork and ice baths—it was about transformation, clarity, and the pursuit of connection.
The first thing that attracted me to Alex’s workshop was the promise of a deeper connection with myself, and I wasn’t disappointed. From the first moment, I knew this was going to be a profound journey that would challenge and inspire me.
This workshop is an incredible opportunity to reconnect with yourself, explore the potential of your breath, and learn to thrive through the power of the cold. With practices like Authentic Relating, it also provided a powerful means of connecting with the group—a small but intimate gathering of 12 individuals.
The support and genuine connection we built with each other truly elevated the experience, making it a safe space to explore vulnerability and healing. We were also treated to delicious vegetarian Indonesian food for lunch, along with hot ginger and lemongrass tea to warm us up.
A Deep Dive into the Workshop Experience
Workshop Content and Structure
The workshop ran from 8:30 am to 6:00 pm across two days, structured thoughtfully into segments of breathwork, ice baths, and authentic relating practices. This combination of elements provided a well-rounded approach to self-care and personal transformation.
The “Flowgram,” as Alex referred to it, began each day with movement and dance, helping us arrive in our bodies and set a collective tone.
The breathwork sessions involved various techniques, including the BreathingCold method—a blend of conscious connected breathing, breath retentions, and therapeutic touch.
While I found the breathwork process quite challenging at times, especially with the hyperventilating exercises, I understood that this discomfort was part of the deeper transformation.
The physical release and emotional revelations that followed were powerful reminders of the potential of breath.
The ice bath experience, on the other hand, was something I approached with more confidence, as I have practiced winter swimming before. Each day, we immersed ourselves in the cold, starting with a two-minute dip on day one and escalating to a ten-minute challenge on day two.
It was fascinating to see how different participants approached the ice bath, and Alex continually reminded us that we were in control—each of us could choose our own limits, and no one was forced to do anything.
The Authentic Relating exercises were an essential component, allowing us to deepen our connection with one another.
We practiced the “Art of Getting Someone’s World,” which opened space for us to be fully seen and heard by the group.
This part of the workshop helped foster trust and a sense of community, which made the entire experience even more meaningful.
Safety Measures
Safety Protocols
Safety was a priority throughout the workshop, particularly during the ice bath sessions and breathwork exercises.
Alex and his assistant ensured that everyone understood the process and provided clear instructions before each activity.
We were reminded that participation was voluntary and that we could step back at any time if we felt uncomfortable.
The emphasis on safety and personal agency made it easier for me to push my boundaries while feeling supported.
Alex also made sure that the group was aware of the physiological effects of both breathwork and ice baths. This knowledge helped demystify some of the more intense sensations and allowed us to trust the process.
The music played during the breathwork sessions was another supportive element, helping us stay present and move through any challenging moments.
Impact on Personal Growth
Emotional and Physical Benefits
The BreathingCold workshop had a profound impact on my emotional and physical well-being.
The breathwork sessions allowed me to release deep-rooted emotions that I had been holding onto, while the ice baths provided an opportunity to face and overcome fear.
The combination of these practices left me feeling alive, reborn, and deeply connected to myself.
One of the most significant shifts I experienced was a newfound sense of presence. I noticed this change not only during the workshop but also in my day-to-day life afterward.
The practices helped me reconnect with my breath, which Alex often described as a reflection of our inner world. By becoming more aware of my breathing, I felt more grounded and in control of my emotions.
The group energy was another key factor in my personal growth.
The support and encouragement from my fellow participants created a sense of belonging and accountability.
We started with a bonding exercise where we shared our intentions for the workshop, and by the end, it felt like we had formed a close-knit community.
The follow-up support provided by Alex and the group was invaluable, as it helped me integrate the lessons learned during the workshop into my everyday life.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Supportive Atmosphere: Alex created a safe and welcoming environment where everyone felt comfortable being vulnerable. The emphasis on privacy and confidentiality made it easier for participants to open up.
- Structured and Organized: The Flowgram was well-structured, with a clear progression from movement to breathwork to ice baths. This organization helped me feel prepared for each part of the experience.
- Expert Facilitation: Alex’s knowledge of the physiological effects of breathwork and ice baths was impressive. He provided detailed explanations that helped me understand what was happening in my body, which made the experience less intimidating. Alex is French, and his English is impeccable with a slight French accent, which added a unique touch to his facilitation.
- Group Connection: The small group size allowed for meaningful connections, and the Authentic Relating exercises helped foster a sense of community.
Cons
- Initial Discomfort: The Breathwork exercises, particularly the hyperventilating, were challenging for me. I personally found it overwhelming at times, but I also recognized that this discomfort was part of the growth process and belongs to me only so this is not really a con.
Community and Networking
Post-Workshop Support
One of the highlights of the BreathingCold workshop was the sense of community that continued even after the two days were over.
Alex provided us with resources to continue our breathwork practice at home, and the group stayed in touch through a messaging app, offering support and encouragement as we integrated what we had learned.
This ongoing connection has been a powerful reminder of the shared experience we all had and has helped me stay committed to my breathwork and ice bath practices.
