Bali is home to some great yoga teachers from across the world including Indonesian native, Olop Arpipi.
Olop’s organic development of yoga first started in Europe where he was introduced to the Sivananda approach to yoga. However, Olop resonated deeply with the Iyengar style of yoga that eventually lead him to be trained as an intermediate senior level 1 teacher from the Iyengar institute in Pune, India.
Olop Arpipi teaches iyengar yoga in Bali three times a week, beginners and intermediate levels of Iyengar yoga, from his studio in the back streets of trendy Seminyak, Bali. The studio is situated in the back of his home within a lush garden oasis of wandering chickens, geese and dogs. The studio itself is large and well-equipped with the usual Iyengar prop list and a rope wall for assisted asana. There atmosphere is welcoming, friendly and tranquil where you may find Olop hanging upside-down on the rope wall mentoring a student before class begins.
The classes are busy, buzzy and home a collective mix of international students who all share a warm smile and love of yoga.
The man himself has become a bit of a Bali legend and before you actually have the pleasure of his company, he remains an intriguing whisper in the playground of Bali’s yogi community. “Just look out for the door marked with a huge painted 7 and follow the path though lush vegetation, the sounds of nature and the smell of incense and there you will find Olop”. It really is like following the yellow brick road to Iyengar land.
Olop teaches with grace and humor along with detailed instructions that really resonate with your body. He pushes you to reach a higher level without being obtrusive and allows you to feel each pose with a conscious mentality. He may even get his friend the skeleton out a few times to highlight the exact parts of the body you should be using which really helps with your asana and aids as a fun tool that Olop uses as a vessel for his fun style of teaching. The classes last for 2 hours giving you a real opportunity to immerse yourself fully within the art and precision of this beautiful iyengar yoga practice lead by one of the finest teacher in Bali.
