OM Botanical Magnesium Body Lotion review (2026): does it help sleep and muscle recovery?
I was a beauty editor in women’s magazines for almost 20 years so I’ve been lucky enough to try thousands of body lotions over the years. From butters and whips to soufflés and sprays, there’s not much that hasn’t graced the skin of my body.
So when I heard about lotion with magnesium for better sleep and muscle recovery, a magnesium moisturizer designed to support sleep and muscle recovery, I was intrigued.
Now, I’m no stranger to skincare ingredients (see above!) but magnesium has never really hit the heady heights of powerhouses like retinol, hyaluronic acid and vitamin C.
So what’s the deal with this plant-based body lotion that’s infused with magnesium and botanicals to help moisturize the skin, relax sore muscles and induce better sleep? Here’s my honest review.

About OM Botanical
Founded and formulated by Ayurvedic expert and molecular biology-trained Sudhir Shah, OM Botanical’s philosophy is to deliver safe, effective and completely natural skincare products.
Shah’s son began struggling with eczema during his college years and couldn’t find anything that was 100% natural but powerful enough to actually work. By combining his knowledge of Ayurveda with his master’s degree in molecular biology, Shah decided to create a range of products that did just that.
OM Botanical is a wellness-inspired skincare brand that uses plant-based, food-grade ingredients that are pH-balanced and freshly made in small batches for optimal efficacy. They’re even safe enough to eat.
Quick note: I’ve been keen to simplify my entire beauty routine for a while, so alongside the body lotion, I also tried their ayurvedic shampoo for a healthy scalp. I highly recommend exploring the entire collection, which even includes 100% natural products for your dog.

About OM Botanical Magnesium Body Lotion
OM Botanical boasts an impressive 36 all-natural products with Magnesium Body Lotion being its flagship body care product.
Magnesium Body Lotion ingredients & benefits
The hero ingredient here is magnesium chloride which is sourced from the Dead Sea to help replenish magnesium levels to the skin. The Dead Sea, known for its high mineral concentration, is the deepest and most saline lake on the planet and has long been associated with skin-supporting properties.
OM Botanical Magnesium Body Lotion delivers a solid 4,500mg per ounce of magnesium chloride which makes it extremely competitive alongside other magnesium body lotions like Ancient Minerals and Better You.
The health benefits of magnesium
Magnesium is an essential mineral that’s involved in hundreds of biochemical reactions within the body. It plays a key role in mood, sleep, memory and muscle movement and is known to help convert food into energy, regulate blood pressure and support brain function.
Scary thought: according to UCLA Health, nearly half of adults in the US may not be getting enough magnesium, which highlights just how common magnesium deficiency can be.
So, why use magnesium in a body lotion?
The jury’s out on whether transdermal magnesium (which means it’s been applied to the skin) is ‘better’ than topical sprays or oral supplements, but it’s often a preferred way to improve magnesium levels in the body.
How so? Magnesium sprays can sometimes cause skin irritation, dryness or stinging, while oral supplements can be linked to digestive distress.
Studies reported in clinical research on transdermal magnesium and skin health show promising effects on improving the skin’s barrier function, enhancing hydration, and helping to reduce inflammation.
“Magnesium salts are known to bind water, influence epidermal proliferation and differentiation, and enhance permeability barrier repair.”
Proksch E, Nissen HP, Bremgartner M, Urquhart C. Bathing in a magnesium-rich Dead Sea salt solution improves skin barrier function, enhances skin hydration, and reduces inflammation in atopic dry skin. Int J Dermatol. 2005 Feb;44(2):151-7. doi: 10.1111/j.1365-4632.2005.02079.x. PMID: 15689218.
That being said, there’s limited evidence on how much magnesium is actually absorbed through the skin, so if your goal is improving sleep, Mayo Clinic experts note that oral magnesium supplements may be more effective for absorption.

First impressions

Packaging
The packaging design includes a mountain scape background with a silhouette of plants, grass and flowers so straight away you know you’re getting a natural, plant-based product. I love that the tube is made from carbon neutral sugarcane plastic and both the tube and box are fully recyclable.
I also noticed the tube has a PAO symbol on the back which isn’t always the case. This is the Period After Opening number and shows you how many months a product will stay safe and effective after you break the seal.
You might not be bothered by this but I find it very useful since I have so many products that don’t get used every day. For reference, this body lotion is good for 24 months.
Scent & texture

Straight away, and strictly for testing purposes only, I tried a little on my hand and then on the back of my arm. I didn’t immediately fall in love with the herbal-lemony smell, but it wasn’t too potent and didn’t linger so I wasn’t put off. It’s also important to remember that the scent is due to the ingredients used rather than fillers added for fragrant purposes only.
The texture felt creamy and rich on my skin and, although it took a little effort to rub it in, my arm felt immediately smoother and moisturized.
I’m pleased to report that out of the different magnesium lotions I’ve tried for sore muscles, this one stood out for how nice it felt on my skin.
Performance and results
In terms of the efficacy of OM Botanical Magnesium Body Lotion over time, I decided to focus on four main areas.
Skin hydration

As a body lotion first and foremost, it genuinely delivered. It required a little rubbing in, but it absorbed quickly, left my skin noticeably moisturized, and didn’t feel too heavy, rich or sticky.
The combination of shea butter, mango butter and aloe vera meant it really pulled its weight as a standalone body lotion, not just a vehicle for magnesium.
Muscle soreness
I used this after a couple of strength-training classes – specifically applying it to my legs and shoulders after showering.
Whether the magnesium itself did any heavy lifting is hard to say definitively, but the act of massaging a fast-absorbing lotion into tired muscles made a noticeable difference to how I felt. If the transdermal magnesium added anything on top of it, then bonus.
Does magnesium lotion help muscle recovery?
Using this lotion with magnesium after workouts helped reduce tension, especially when massaged into tired muscles.
While it’s difficult to pinpoint how much of that effect comes from the magnesium itself, the combination of hydration and massage made a noticeable difference in how my body felt post-exercise. It’s a simple addition that fits naturally into a recovery routine.
Stress and relaxation
Magnesium is known for its role in regulating the nervous system, and applying this lotion in the evening felt like a deliberate act of winding down. I believe there’s real value in that ritual alone.
The light scent also added a subtle aromatherapy quality without being too overpowering.
Sleep aid
Sleep is one of the most common reasons people reach for magnesium products, so I was eager to see if this magnesium body lotion would make a difference.
To put it to the test I skipped my usual magnesium supplement for a couple of nights and applied this lotion to my legs and feet before bed as recommended. The result? I slept OK… But honestly? Not as well as usual.

On the third night, therefore, I decided to combine the two, and I slept like a dream.
Was it the transdermal magnesium doing its job? Or was it the combination of my regular supplement alongside the calming ritual of massaging lotion into my skin? It’s hard to say with certainty, but I do believe this lotion feels like a credible alternative if you don’t get on with magnesium supplements.
And it comes with the added bonus of moisturizing your skin. Can’t argue with that.

Does magnesium body lotion help with sleep?
Magnesium body lotion is often used as part of a nighttime routine to support relaxation and better sleep. In my experience, applying it before bed helped create a calming ritual that made it easier to wind down.
That said, I personally noticed the best results when I combined it with my usual magnesium supplement, rather than relying on the lotion alone.
Is OM Botanical Magnesium Body Lotion suitable for sensitive skin?
OM Botanical is a good choice for most people with sensitive skin and is rated as 91% Top Allergen Free by SkinSAFE, which reinforces its gentle, skin-friendly formulation.
If your skin tends to be dry or slightly sensitive, this magnesium moisturizer for dry and sensitive skin is worth a closer look, especially since ingredients like aloe and mango butter help make the formula feel more nourishing and gentle.
However, you should always do a patch test first, especially if you have very reactive skin or are known to be sensitive to citrus essential oils.

Final verdict: is this magnesium body lotion worth it for sleep & recovery?
OM Botanical Magnesium Body Lotion is an impressive magnesium lotion that represents solid value and works on two levels.
As a body lotion it’s genuinely good – fast-absorbing, non-greasy and moisturizing. And as a magnesium supplement? Well, the act of moisturizing the skin is certainly relaxing and I felt like it enhanced the effects of my oral supplement on the nights I used it.
The ingredients list is clean, natural and reassuringly free from synthetic nasties that often lurk in a lot of body care products, and the sugarcane tube and fully recyclable carton are thoughtful touches if you care about sustainability.
The one thing that stopped this from being a perfect score is the scent. The lemon-herbal aroma is natural and not unpleasant, but it’s noticeable, and if you’re sensitive to essential oil scents, you should bear that in mind.

FAQs
Results vary depending on what you’re using it for. Some people notice a difference in moisturization, muscle tension or relaxation within 15–30 minutes of application. For longer-term benefits like improved sleep quality or reduced cramping, consistent daily use over one to two weeks is required before meaningful changes are noted.
Individual responses vary, but transdermal magnesium is unlikely to make you noticeably drowsy. It absorbs gradually and in relatively small amounts so it can reduce stress, anxiety and relax sore muscles but it shouldn’t interfere with physical or mental alertness.
OM Botanical’s magnesium lotion is formulated for effective transdermal absorption, and many customers find it a valuable part of their wellness routine.
That said, if you have a diagnosed magnesium deficiency, we recommend consulting your healthcare provider about the best approach for your needs.
Absolutely. Daily use helps maintain consistent magnesium levels in the body and keeps skin hydrated. Many people apply it daily, after showering or before bed.
If you’re significantly magnesium deficient a mild tingling sensation can be experienced with some magnesium moisturizers but this usually settles with regular use.
However, OM Botanical’s formula is specifically designed to minimize tingling with soothing botanicals like aloe vera and mango butter.
Also, avoid applying lotion with magnesium to broken or freshly shaved skin, and do a patch test first, particularly if you have very sensitive skin.
