Kundalini yoga teacher and physiotherapist.
A four-decade yoga practice
Maren began studying yoga in 1983, when the practice was still considered unconventional in much of the West. Over the decades she trained under teachers including Dr. Ernest Wood, K. Pattabhi Jois, and Ramanand Patel, and now teaches kundalini yoga from Göppingen, Germany. She also works as a physiotherapist specializing in neurology and sports injuries, and teaches myofascial anatomy and taping. For YOGI TIMES, she has written on schizophrenia, exploring whether it should be understood purely as mental illness or whether some traditions treat it as something closer to a spiritual gift, and on her own near-death experience, and how it changed the course of her life.
A holistic approach
Her teaching blends physical practice with diet, cross-training, and philosophy into what she calls a holistic approach to a fulfilling life. Her schizophrenia article has been translated across eight of YOGI TIMES’s international editions, and both it and her near-death experience piece draw on her clinical neurology background alongside her own lived, sometimes difficult personal history, a combination that gives her writing on the mind, and on what happens when it’s tested by illness or crisis, unusually direct authority.
