Following the long tradition of yogic teachings, Beneath the Surface is a book presented in the form of a dialogue between a student and his teacher. Both authors of the book, David Hurwitz (the student) and Srivatsa Ramaswami (the teacher), come with pedigrees that create a seminal work. Yoga Beneath the Surface is one of the clearest teachings on yoga  from a modern instructor.

It has been said that only a proper question will draw an answer of relevance. Mr. Hurwitz, a yogi in his own right, posits such questions on varied topics including yogic philosophy, asanas, pranayama and meditation, as well as every day matters.

Mr. Ramaswami, a student of the legendary TKV Krishnamacharya for over 33 years, shows that he has absorbed these teachings in the best tradition of guru and student; his answers reverberate with the wisdom of his teacher. The breath and depth of his knowledge of the older texts is matched only by the clarity of his understanding. Some of his answers will startle with their insight, clearly showing that he is a teacher of great import himself.

The understanding of Vinyasa Krama Yoga as sequence and movement; the importance of linking breath to movement as a prelude to pranayama; the insistence on sequential ashtanga (eight steps) as the only path to create true change; the understanding of yoga as art, therapy and spiritual path, are all detailed in Mr. Ramaswami’s two earlier books, which will give any student of yoga much to reflect upon. To all yogis: buy this book and keep it close to you at all times!
