eye see you
Like many parents, yours may have suggested that eating carrots will allow you to see in the dark. Fact or fiction? Are there really vegetables that can help eyesight in general? Let’s take a look at some facts and foods that are known to help with vision.
Better To See You With
It should be no secret that your eyes, just like the rest of your body, rely on specific vitamins to do their job. These vitamins can be found in different types of foods, including but not limited to: leafy green vegetables, eggs, fish, fruits and vegetables, dark foods, and more.
Are You Eating Your Vegetables?
As stated above, leafy green vegetables are known for aiding your eyesight. You’re probably asking, “why?” Well, here it is: these vegetables offer a long list of vitamins, including A, B-12, C, and calcium. However, more importantly, leafy green vegetables are known to carry carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin, which assist the retina. Specific vegetables you should be consuming are kale, sprouts, and spinach.
Noted as being (relatively) in the same family, you should also try to eat brightly colored vegetable and fruits. Examples that are acceptable could be squash, carrots, or sweet potatoes. What’s the reasoning behind these specific types of foods? These foods carry vitamin A, which in turn could assist your eyes with sunlight damage.
Eggs, Not Just Good For Breakfast
According to the-lasik-directory.com, eggs offer health benefits for the eyes, including “increasing the level of lutein and zeaxanthin by up to thirty percent.” Eggs are also noted as carrying omega-3 fatty acids, which in turn could potentially reduce dry-eye symptoms and reduce the chance of glaucoma. An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but an egg a day could possibly keep the eye doctor away.
Do You Fish?
It’s well noted that fish is full of protein. If you’re trying to lose weight or stay fit, then you may already be consuming different types of fish i.e. salmon, tuna, sardines, etc. on a regular basis. But what if you could kill two birds with one stone? That is, what if you could be partaking in a healthier lifestyle, but simultaneously be working to better your vision?
Like eggs, fish are known for containing omega-3 fatty acids, which again, assist with dry eye symptoms and could reduce the chance of glaucoma. Fish carry vitamin A and D, which also strive to help keep the retina clean and healthy.
Of course, the above-mentioned are just a few examples that are known to assist with better vision. Garlic and onions, chocolate, and berries are also considered to be helpful when it comes to creating healthy eyes and clearer vision. You may find that you don’t like some of these foods. However, if eating carrots or fish on a regular basis could potentially assist with your eyesight, then wouldn’t it be worth it to work the two into your meal plan?
Also, always make sure to wear the prescription glasses if you need them. Neglecting to do so will result in increasing eye damage. Glasses now come in fashionable forms, and can be great fashion accessories, but if you still don’t like the idea of wearing glasses you can choose to wear contacts.
Always make sure to go for quality and look up the best options near you (eg.: best contact lenses in NZ).
