how to become one

it’s easier than you think

“If the chimney is full of smoke, how can the light be seen? If the mind is full of dirt, how can the soul shine?” – Yogaswami.

When it comes to being “One” with ourselves, our environment, or with whatever ultimate power you believe in, the road can get kind of foggy. So let’s begin with the basics: what does being “One” mean anyway?

Obtaining a sense of interconnectedness with life is the main idea. It’s not about how you get along with other people or feeling blissfulness 24/7, it is about understanding the natural flow of life and feeling a deep, passionate connection with your own reality. You have a sense that you have a good handle on your life and control your thoughts and feelings. At the same time, you understand that some things are out of your control. You love for the sake of the pure, undeniable fact that it is what we are put on this earth to do. You embrace and acknowledge the natural beauty of all things that your ultimate power has freely provided for you. You come to the realization that no matter what happens in life, in or out of your control, the world will continue to keep turning.

The goal of spiritual paths is to recognize oneness with our reality. We strive to be One and direct our focus on elements that will help us become One. Often we fail to realize, however, is that we already are One. In reality, there is nothing to achieve, nothing to stress over, nothing to change, nothing to do, but wake up.

Waking up allows us to be aware of our essential unity with our ultimate power, and with our life. Ironically, our minds continuously run in circles trying to determine is needed to achieve such unity, when we are always in the presence of it.

So if we already are One, why is it so difficult to realize? Maybe because it isn’t an overwhelming, getting hit by a spiritual truck experience that you feel all of the sudden. It is a gradual feeling that rises to the surface out of you. A feeling that allows you to feel peacefulness and unity.

For anyone who has tried to meditate, you know that trying to clear your mind can sometimes feel like trying to stop a hyper-active chattering monkey that refuses to be quiet. The reality is that our minds are completely and utterly out of control. We may think we have a handle on our thoughts, but there is always some traffic hiding in the background. We must practice slowly, day by day, training our mind to be clear.

Clean out all the built up unnecessary junk or stress that is cluttering your mind so it can have room to flow freely. The key is to become the master of our own mind, not its slave.

Remember, you already are One. You have the ability to connect with yourself and the world around you. So slow down and breathe. Let yourself discover the great power you have within!
