During my several months in Malaysia, I had been hunting around to find a yoga studio to fall in love with. I longed to find somewhere where I could be guided to that all-encompassing ‘yoga bliss’. It’s safe to say that on the island of Penang, in its capital city of Georgetown, I found the perfect place.

Wholey Wonder Vegan Café and Yoga Studio sits in a trendy area on Jalan Gurdwara, nestled between a local eatery and the Hin Art Gallery. Downstairs is where the charming and rustic vegan café is established; offering plant-based delights ranging from pizzas and cakes to freshly made juices.

The studio itself sits on the second floor and with its cosy and modest size, it’s a lovingly secret space. A maximum of ten students can fit comfortably into each class, which provides for an intimate affair. The décor makes it feel spacious and airy, yet calming at the same time. The dark floorboards are matched with whitewashed walls and bare brick. A mixture of rough and smooth, a contrast of light and dark, much like the yin and yang energies wrapped up within all of us. It’s a reminder for students to accept the light and dark within, even before they’ve rolled out their mats. In the corner sits a Himalayan salt lamp on the shelves near the entrance cleansing the energy in the space as students walk in. Mats can also be provided for classes if you aren’t traveling with one.

The studio is fresh, uncluttered and bright when the light falls in by day. By night the unique lighting fixture coats the studio in a warm glow. Tammy the owner and one of the yoga teachers of Wholey Wonder, has created a safe and attentive space for yoga to truly be explored. Different yoga styles are on offer including Yin, Hatha, Vinyasa Flow, and Power yoga. The class schedule is regularly updated on their Facebook page, as well as details about upcoming events.
