healthy food, not so healthy?

At some point in your life, you’ve probably tried (or are trying now) to lose weight. After all, isn’t the number one New Year’s Resolution the repeated promise to get healthier? Dropping the pounds can be difficult, challenging, and overly frustrating. Of course, there are different means and methods to go about losing weight: dieting, working out, tricks and techniques.

The bottom line is simple: different methods will offer different results for different people; no two people’s bodies are the same. Therefore, what worked for your friend may not, in fact, work for you. However, there may be a reason as to why you’re not seeing the results you’d hope to. Are you eating the right foods? More importantly, are you staying away from the bad foods? Let’s take a look at some examples.

What Are You Eating?

Have you been eating rice cakes? If you answered “yes” to this question, then maybe you heard that rice cakes were a good diet food because they are low in fat. However, what you weren’t told is that rice cakes are high in glycemic index, meaning that this type of food is bad for weight loss and your health.

Have you been tricked by the idea of fat-free salad dressing? Fat-free salad dressings aren’t as helpful as they may sound. For example, companies have been known to blend in sugar and high fructose corn syrup to the mix, resulting in fat-free dressings becoming unnatural, and not so great for weight loss, after all.

What to do now?

If you’ve been eating grits, now would be a good time to stop. According to Well Wisdom, grits, or leftover pieces of corn processing, do not have high amounts of vitamins or minerals. Grits are also noted as not having any essential fats, and only a tiny (barely any at all) amount of fiber. What’s makes grits an even worse meal to consume, is that they lack flavor and are usually dabbed with an excess amount of butter or heavy cream. In short: grits can be seen as wrecking the useful tools that everybody needs i.e. simple carbohydrates and saturated fats.

You probably already know this, but the worst thing you can consume is a sugar-sweetened beverage i.e. soda pop, sweet tea, specific juices, etc. Sugary beverages are known as “empty calories.” More importantly, these beverages create bigger waistlines without a feeling of fullness. The sugars added to these drinks could potentially result in heart disease issues, as well as making it difficult for your body to partake in exercise, creating chronic diseases.

Staying away from different foods that taste good but are bad for your body is a hard task to complete. The trick here is moderation. What does this mean, exactly? You are allowed to treat yourself every once in a while. If you’re working out and eating healthy most of the time, then it’s perfectly all right to reward yourself with a cookie, piece of chocolate, or whatever it is that you’re craving but just remember to eat small portions.

To your health!
