This weekend, New York City was home to the 1st Annual “The Seed” Experience, NYC’s 1st all vegan lifestyle conference.

Held at a beautifully renovated loft space in SoHo, The Seed Experience entertained approximately 4,000 attendees who strolled through 3 naturally bright and airy rooms lined with rows of vegan friendly foods, clothing, drinks and other lifestyle accessories.

This conference was instrumental in making the world of veganism much more “user friendly” to the average New Yorker. In the past, veganism has been very much misunderstood and somewhat mistakenly viewed as having a political agenda. The Seed Experience went far to change people’s perceptions of what it means to eat a plant-based diet from a nutritional/health, as well as animal and planetary-consciousness perspective.

Some of the pioneers in the field of plant-based diet were in attendance to tout the pros to a vegan diet. Esteemed Dr. Joel Fuhrman was there to talk about “Winning the War Against Cancer” and how essential micronutrients (fruits and veggies) pave the way to reducing all incidences of cancer. Brendan Brazier, professional athlete and author was on-site to talk about “Plant Based Performance Nutrition” and how to unlock your full potential through the use of food. New York Times Best Selling Author, Kathy Freston was also in attendance chatting about “Leaning in to Weight Loss and Health.”

Animal advocates, Jenny Brown and Eddie Garza of the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary and Mercy for Animals respectively were both in attendance and “Speaking Up For Farm Animals” and “Inspiring Compassion” in our world today.

Amie Hamlin of the New York Coalition for Healthy School Food was also in attendance discussing how to “Plant The Seeds In Schools” in terms of how to educate our youth and heal the system.

There were also movie screenings of “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead,” Joe Cross’s documentary on his path to weight loss and better health as well as Leigh Fulkerson’s “Forks Over Knives” and Marissa Miller Wolfson’s “Vegucated” among other great vegan-oriented documentaries.

The Natural Gourmet Institute and My Sweet Vegan held cooking demos daily among others and the Jivamukti Yoga School, NYC, held daily yoga classes.

There were also some amazing and very unique local vendors on-site sharing their inspiration and passion for their products. Among them was Gingersnaps Organic Café, East Village sharing their raw pizza with zucchini walnut bread, sundried tomato sauce and Brazilian nut cheese as well as their raw taco with pumpkinseed salsa, guacamole and flax/corn bread. Lovebug Kitchen was also there sharing their chocolate maple ”˜bacon’ shake and molten ”˜cheddar’ jalapeno cornbread. Rescue Chocolate was on-site sampling some delicious peanut butter pit bull chocolate where 100% of the profits go directly to animal rescue organizations.

For a 1st annual conference, this event was a huge success. The message it is putting out in terms of awareness and consciousness is slowly planting a seed that will only continue to grow and spread to people of all ages. Hopefully next year there will be more than one!
