Caroline Myss
by Lisa Maria
While other teachers float through the world like peaceful prophets, Caroline Myss advances with the determination and grit of a military general. Yet there is a vast depth of sensitivity that tempers her whip-smart intellectual delivery. A pioneer in the fields of energy medicine and human consciousness, Myss has authored three New York Times bestsellers: “Anatomy of the Spirit,” “Why People Don’t Heal and How They Can,” and “Sacred Contracts.” Caroline has appeared in two highly successful public television programs, including ‘Three Levels of Power and How to Use Them.’ She currently lives in Chicago.

Caroline recently traveled to San Francisco to promote her latest book, “Invisible Acts of Power: Personal Choices that Create Miracles.” We had a chance to squeeze in a chat over coffee, in-between her other media interviews and lunch in Chinatown. Dressed in a preppy pink sweater, jeans, black slip-on Merrills and gold jewelry, Caroline looks more like the host of a suburban barbeque than the avant-garde of a major spiritual and cultural revolution.

While researching material for another book, Caroline received an avalanche of testimonials on generosity that crashed through her no-nonsense, professorial identity. Her voice drops into an emotional whisper: “Sit in a room and read fourteen hundred stories of divine intervention. Just sit there - one after another of miracles, of grace, of generosity - just sit and do that and think that you aren’t gonna smash wide open. It’s simply not possible. I used to be quite stable before this book. I did not see this coming. Not only was that unexpected for me, but the size of the download became perhaps, a long overdue, much-needed spiritual awakening for me. I started to understand the inner journey like I’d never understood it. I started to understand the nature of generosity, the nature of power, the nature of healing.”

These stories and the patterns they revealed became the basis for “Invisible Acts.” Within this book, Caroline explains how we become channels for divine grace and miracles through kind, compassionate and generous actions. When we act compassionately without any agenda or expectations of reward, Myss explains that God is able to work invisibly, anonymously through us. And as we move from visible acts, such as helping a friend, to invisible acts, like prayer and healing, we experience profound personal empowerment. She then goes on to explore the seven stages of practicing compassion and generosity, and how they correspond to the chakra system. “Each chakra is a complex universe that unfolds gradually. This book took me by surprise because I did not expect to discover yet more insights into the chakras, into the human energy system.”

Caroline has spent years penetrating the mysteries of human consciousness. Yet this was not what she planned to do with her life. It was while she was on assignment as a journalist at an Elisabeth Kübler-Ross event - the psychiatrist and author of “On Death and Dying” - that Caroline had her first spiritual wake-up call. She took a hard left and emerged with a Master’s degree in Theology. She went on to found Stillpoint Publishing, only to leave the company after her skill as a medical intuitive became clear. Caroline’s talent as a healer and teacher have continued to fuel numerous books, classes, workshops and retreats, and her tough love attitude has endeared her to people worldwide.

Caroline’s passion for her work grows directly out of her lifelong study of history. She softly taps her fingers to her lips before she speaks. “I don’t understand how anybody can make sense of the moment without understanding the hour, or the year, or the decade, or the century. How can you look at today and not understand that the tremors that are going on are not about just one act of terrorism but a replay of the Christian Crusades?”

“This isn’t about those bad terrorists, oh no. Who’s the terrorist? This is so complex. And to look at the leaders on the global theater who are attempting - all of them - to mastermind the shift of this wheel into a new age. The inadequacy of the global leaders across the board: they are men of violence all lacking wisdom, with no soul. And these are the people who are trying to inspire humanity to move forward? Show me one statesman, show me one philosopher, where are the Illuminati, where are the Founding Fathers again?”

Words tumble out of her mouth, hanging in the air with the intensity of her delivery. “To be a person of integrity - no matter what you do - is the challenge of the human being, not just the so-called spiritual person. It applies to everybody. In my opinion, I’ve seen that the lack of congruency is a factor as to why people don't heal, for example. Someone can say, ‘I’m doing yoga, I’m doing healthy, natural things.’ But the absence of congruency - when the heart, the mind and the spirit are in conflict - all the yoga in the world can’t compensate for an incongruent spirit. A real invisible act of power is the capacity to use the skills of the spirit that you are developing in yourself with honesty and integrity. To become congruent and to be able to live a life trans-narcissism. Visible acts are to help a person’s body, invisible is to speed a person’s spirit.”

She briefly pauses, rubbing her hands together while collecting her thoughts. “I wanted to inspire people to see that the consistent message of Heaven, no matter where you look on this Earth, is kindness to others, service to others, prayers for others. That there is no end to the power that generates. One of the effects I hope this book has - truly - is to inspire people to realize, to see again as I did, that there is absolutely no such thing as a small gift, or a small act of power.”
