Simply put, Vaastu’s foundation lies in understanding two main concepts: the nature of the panchabhutas (literally, the ‘five elements’) – earth, fire, akasha (sky), water and air – which are considered “the pillars of Creation”; and, the strengths and influence of the sixteen (cardinal, convergent and sub-) directions of the compass. Vaastu designs buildings that align with the beneficial energies of the five elements so that the subtle yet substantive forces of nature, which act in both creative and destructive ways, work for you, not against you. The effects can be dramatic.

The topography of Silicon Valley is an example of this. With rolling hills to the south and west and a 50-mile expanse of water to the north and east, it is imbued with extremely positive features that create and support great wealth and prosperity. According to Vaastu, the character of water is such that it amplifies energy. When placed in the northeast – the repository of wisdom and wealth – it bestows upon the inhabitants all aspects of good fortune. It’s no wonder that the northeast is given top-priority in Vaastu.

Proper Vaastu in the southwest of a property, which consists of incorporating tall and heavy features, i.e. a hill or high ground, trees, high walls and the placement of buildings (within a home or room, this would translate as tall and heavy furniture) subdues the influence of negativity by cutting off the flow of energy that naturally radiates from that direction. Thus, according to Vaastu, the success of Silicon Valley is ‘natural.’

On the other hand, when water is placed in the southwest – the place that has the highest potential for creating negative influences in life – it becomes a ‘Vaastu-defect’ and is known to bring out the worst qualities in people, including depression, immoral behavior and chronic illness, and creates accidents and tragedy. It is important to consider all angles when building or remodeling your personal space. In Vaastu, there are thousands of balancing, harmonizing adjustments that can change the energetics of any environment for the better. Unfortunately, it is fair to say that from an energetic standpoint, most of the world’s homes are not built to support positive energy. Fortunately, Vaastu prescribes many remedies.

Here are some invaluable Vaastu tips for your home:

• Place the master bedroom in the southwest – it strengthens the commanding ability of the heads of household and makes family life run smoothly. This being said, make sure your children don’t live/sleep in the SW. Otherwise they will dominate the family, or be overburdened with responsibilities inappropriate for their age.

• An ideal place for a secondary bedroom used for children, domestic help and guests or an office is in the northwest, which stimulates clarity of mind and movement. In this way, children naturally tend not to zone out for hours in front of the TV or computer and the energy gently inspires guests not to overstay their welcome.

• Sleep with the top of your head pointing south – it brings peace, sweet dreams, good health and recharges your soul power. Never sleep with your head to the north! Your physical and mental health will suffer. According to Vaastu, you will loose 50% of your will power.

• The ideal setting for the kitchen is in the southeast, the place where the fire element exerts its most positive influence. Here, the kitchen stimulates greater harmony and nurturing in relationships and specifically improves the well-being of women.

• Which direction you face while cooking also matters. Never cook facing south! You literally ‘cook’ your household – arguments and fights will flair up easily. Always face east or north while cooking; this way, great positive energy naturally goes into the preparation of meals.

• Vaastu emphasizes the healing power of the early morning sun. It purifies the atmosphere, uplifts the energy, awakens the senses and improves one’s health significantly. Therefore, large windows and open space to the east are valuable assets.

By implementing this powerful knowledge we can not only ensure that the influence of our environment supports our endeavors and relationships and fortifies our ability to command in life – that is to say, to live life masterfully – but we can also create a safe and sacred haven for our personal spiritual transformation. By dwelling in the vibrations of a perfect Vaastu home, you create a palace for your soul.
