lifestyle for the modern yogi
sustainable style
Practicing yoga and walking a spiritual path bring us ever closer to the stillness that allows us to become one with the divine. As we move toward this stillness, creating a home that acts as a sanctuary away from the high energy, high impact world of urban life increasingly becomes a necessity. As we seek union through our yoga practice, we must recognize our connection to the tangible world as well as that of the divine. By creating a home sanctuary that exists in harmony with the health of the earth, and its infinitely complex systems, we are practicing yoga.

As part of our preparation for this issue devoted to home and sustainability, the Yogi Times team took a “field trip” to the Santa Monica headquarters of the NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council), which is widely recognized as the “greenest building in America. Our visit gave us a new inspiration to explore and promote ways that we can have a positive impact on the health of the precious environment we all share. Seeing this “green” building first hand and feeling its atmosphere of health and light really brought our ability to affect positive change into tangible reality. While most of us don’t possess the immediate resources to implement all of the innovations we saw at the NRDC in our own homes, we do have the opportunity to make informed, environmentally conscious choices in our everyday lives. When we remodel or redecorate, we can use paint free of V.O.C.’s (volatile organic compounds) and choose recycled and compostable materials. We can explore solar power, daylighting and other creative forms of energy conservation. When we practice yoga, we can buy mats that are free of environmentally harmful PVC. We can choose linens, furniture and bedding manufactured from organic materials. By putting our money as consumers behind products and designs that are safe and beneficial for the environment, we take ever-greater steps toward making them available and affordable for everyone.

As we recently moved to new offices, we made a commitment to be as environmentally conscious as possible as we create our own new sanctuary. With the help of companies like SEED Interiors, Green Fusion Design Center and many more, we are starting our own journey toward sustainability and unity with the perfection of nature. We will keep you posted on our progress throughout the year. Until then, we encourage you to find the inspiration in these pages to start on your own path of environmental health and sustainability.
