One of the great benefits of my growing up in France was being able to enjoy the European notion of vacation, six weeks being the standard time allotted for a “holiday.” Imagine my shock when I moved to California, expecting my next vacation to be one of those lengthy months spent being “fainéant,” or contentedly lazy,

The Travels of a Yogi
Long gone are those lazy months of carefree leisure but so too is the marathon runner. I’ve made the delightful discovery that in the same amount of time it takes to have a lunch meeting and answer the day’s e-mails, I can hop on a plane that will deposit me within minutes of the exquisite white sand beaches of Hawaii or drive my car out of the city to the stillness and serenity of Joshua Tree or Yosemite. Whether it is six weeks on the French Riviera or a weekend in the woods, the secret is in letting go.
We work, we organize, we plan, we practice; we accomplish so much in our everyday lives that we sometimes forget how delightful it can be just to lie on the grass and watch the leaves of a tree move in the wind, to feel the warm sun on our still wet skin, to find the magic in a slowly drifting cloud and to smile at people who don’t understand a single word that we clumsily try to say to them in their native tongue.
So, for this issue we took a virtual plane in search of getaway destinations for adventurous yogis, some exotic and some familiar but all beautiful and inspirational. What we brought back is a collection of places infused with the excitement inherent in exploring new cultures, the unbridled beauty of the natural world and the infinite potential for transformation and discovery. The world is a magical place. Find inspiration in this issue to go out and explore it. But remember as you are exploring that every moment of life is as we invent it and there is plenty of magic to be found at home every time you step outside your front door and feel the California sun shining on your face.
