Upon my return from the festival and conference I began to scrutinize all the different areas of my life, as a consumer, as a business owner, as a member of society. I became inspired to start changing the way I operated across the board. I made huge plans. I would get a hybrid car. I would remodel the Yogi Times office using only environmentally sound products and building materials. I would only support businesses that are operating using totally green methods. Then the reality hit and I realized that while all of my plans seemed so pristine and noble, the actual shift is not something that can happen overnight. |

I surrendered to the reality that the shift to living an environmentally responsible lifestyle is, like everything else, a process. It requires patience, time and commitment. It also requires information. The first step in lightening our footprints is to become informed about the environmentally destructive habits and actions that are ingrained in our culture so that we can find alternatives. The exciting part of all of this, as I discovered in San Francisco, is the fact that there are so many people who are working to heal the wounds we have inflicted on the earth by developing new and innovative ways to act responsibly without sacrificing comfort and convenience. The days when living off the grid meant residing in a hut in a South American jungle are long gone. There are so many simple things we can do right now without sacrificing the comforts to which we have become accustomed. We have not achieved the ultimate goal of living in perfect harmony with nature, but every time we make a conscious, informed choice to support a path of environmental health as consumers and as a society, we are taking another step toward a clean and healthy future.
