WHAT'S NEW

All of us here at Yogi Times are delighted to be celebrating our fourth anniversary. Looking back, it is amazing for us to consider where we are now compared to where we were just one year ago. Yogi Times Los Angeles and San Francisco are growing by leaps and bounds. Yogi Times BUSINESS, the first ever trade publication for the yoga industry is about to celebrate its first anniversary issue this summer and we are fast approaching our first ever Yogi Times BUSINESS Retreat in Maya Tulum, Mexico at the end of September. When we reflect on the original mission of Yogi Times, which was to create a vehicle through which the community could come together and benefit from its shared wisdom, experience and knowledge, we are proud to see that those goals are being realized in ways we never could have anticipated. We trust that you will enjoy our July/August yoga celebration issue. It is a way for us to celebrate our roots and pay homage to the rich and vibrant community that has so enthusiastically embraced us and our work.

Namaste,

Release into Peace - Letting Go & Learning to Live

By Jessie Unmani King and Darlene E. Paris

We live in a culture that values progress. We love to figure out new ways to make everything around us look, sound, feel, taste and work better. We ourselves are no exception to this. We’ve all spent hours scrutinizing ourselves in the mirror, checking for wrinkles, sucking in, fantasizing about a nip here or a tuck there. We make resolutions to eat better, act better, always driving ourselves to do and be more. For us, efficiency and results reign supreme. We have learned to look for ways to derive the greatest possible benefit from the least possible effort, whether it means taking a pill to relieve an ache or having a pizza delivered in under half an hour. While this attitude has lead to tremendous advances that have improved the quality of our lives, it has also ingrained in us a belief and an expectation that all of our problems can and should be solved immediately with minimal effort.

Lost In My Living Room
- How I Learned to Practice at Home

By Ann Bui

One day, I was in class with five other people. We were sitting quietly on our mats facing our teacher. Instead of leading us in a meditation as she normally does, our instructor asked if any of us had a home practice. There was dead silence. I was looking to my left and right to see if anyone would respond with an affirmative. Finally, someone did.  I’ve been going to yoga classes for less than a year. Sometimes I take five yoga classes in a week. I really enjoy these classes for many different reasons. They get my body moving in ways that it normally does not. I get to work on my strength, balance and flexibility. I also get to work with my feelings towards my body. Afterwards, there is a nice reward – the after class yoga high. I always feel like I can run a marathon or hike up a mountain. It’s a fantastic feeling. So that begs the question, “why don’t I have a home practice?”

Yoga teacher Jennifer Durand created the Yoga Garden Game to help children see and feel the positive effects of yoga. The goal of the game is to plant a flower garden before night falls. Through having the kids work together to achieve this goal, instead of competing against one another, they’re able to learn classic yoga poses as well as invent their own. Read More
YOGA TIP
yoga tip
Learn to distinguish between pain and sensation. Pain is a signal that you need to stop. Sensation is a new awakening from an unfamiliar movement. Regular practice of yoga helps to develop awareness of the "edge" between challenge and unhealthy struggle.
