WHAT'S NEW

We have a new reason to celebrate at Yogi Times this month! On May 22, 2006, Yogi Times Editor in Chief, Sophie Parienti, and Publisher, Jean Christophe Gabler became the proud parents of a new baby boy named Enzo. Mother and son are both healthy and happy and we are all looking forward to getting to know this newest member of the Yogi Times family.

As our thoughts at Yogi Times have surrounded the impending arrival of little Enzo, it is natural that we should consider the world that he is being born into and what we want that world to look like. This gave our annual home and sustainability issue a special meaning as we sought to fill it with information, guidance and inspiration for keeping our planet, healthy, pure and beautiful. I think this is one of our strongest issues yet and I’m confident you’ll find plenty of resources to make your home a place of beauty, tranquility and sustainability. Thank you so much for supporting Yogi Times and please keep your letters to the editor coming. It is so valuable for us to hear what you like, what you don’t like and what you want to see in Yogi Times. You can send your letters to info@yogitimes.com.

Namaste,

Simply Green - Small Changes Make a Big Difference

By Sri Kesava

Going green has become a hot topic in pop culture and the media of late, with a number of high profile architects and celebrities showcasing the latest and greatest in high-end, sustainable homes and lifestyles. While most of us would love to live in the green palaces we see on television design shows and in magazines, a phenomenon, which can be described as green elitism, has emerged that causes most of us to feel that the expensive sustainable technologies and new advances in building materials are simply out of reach, relegating us to lives inhabiting outdated toxic boxes. Until sustainable technologies infiltrate the mainstream and become less expensive, there are many ways for people from all walks of life and income brackets to incorporate sustainable practices into their daily lives while making an incalculable impact on the health of the environment. Everyone, including renters, single-family home owners and condo owners can make simple changes in living habits that can have profound long-term benefits both to individual health and to that of the planet without giving up any of the comforts and luxuries we’ve become accustomed to.

Houseplant Prana - Clear the Air and Breathe Easy

By Kyle Roderick

According to EPA estimates, indoor air can be five times more polluted than the air outside. Considering that we spend an average of 90 percent of our time inside, that’s a pranic bummer. But before you plunge into eco-anxiety, here’s some great green news: both your prana and your air supply can be purified with various and easyto- source plants that host toxin-digesting, oxygen-producing microbes. While a NASA study has found that twelve houseplants can help remove volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) from indoor spaces, air-filtering “biowalls” made of diverse plants can also virtually eliminate indoor air pollution.

“Just as our planet’s rainforests consume pollutants and exhale oxygen to support all life forms, certain indoor plants can act as living air purifiers for your home,” says second generation florist John Cosentino, owner of Malibu Florist in Malibu.
