WHAT'S
NEW
We’re delighted with the way our second Yogi Times
women’s
issue turned out. We were blessed to have five strong, vibrant and
powerful women from a variety of backgrounds share their views on life,
success and the beauty of living their inspiration. What was most
striking about these women was the way in which all of them, in their
different ways are working to promote unity and understanding among all
people whether it’s through yoga, care for the environment or
interpersonal relationships.
In addition to that you’ll find all of the usual helpful
resources like great recipes, fine dining, community news and events,
and all the other things you’ve come to expect from Yogi
Times.
Enjoy the issue and send us your letters to the editor at
info@yogitimes.com.

SNEAK PEAK

The Myth
of the Body Beautiful
By John Sovec
Women’s
bodies are sensuous, miraculous bringers of life. Yet a
vast number of women harbor feelings of displeasure or even shame about
their bodies, maintaining a judgmental internal dialogue of failure and
disappointment over their perceived body images. For many women,
looking in the mirror exposes a series of self-manifested flaws for
which clothing becomes a tool used to remove the embarrassment of any
perceived imperfection. What is the root of this overwhelming presence
of self-judgment and displeasure?
An answer might lie in the myth of the perfect body. American women are
exposed to a constant stream of imagery and consumer propaganda which
portrays unattainable ideals, leading women to believe that they are
not good enough. ‘Perfection’ is a standard set by
fashion
magazines and movie stars, both of which present images of tall, young,
exceedingly slim women with no visible body fat, toned abs, and
unblemished skin that is airbrushed to perfection. Constantly bombarded
with these images, many women equate anything short of this imagery to
be failure.

Yoga and
Children With AD/HD
By Darlene D’Arezzo
Attention
deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) is a chronic, neurobehavioral
condition characterized by pervasive inattention, and/or impulsivity
and hyperactivity. According to the Center for Disease Control, 4.4
million children and young adults have been diagnosed with AD/HD; it is
the most common psychiatric disorder among children. AD/HD affects
home-life, schoolwork and interpersonal relationships.
Some
children with AD/HD may appear dazed and confused, forgetful, have
difficulty getting started or staying on task, or focused on an
activity; they cannot resist distraction or control their attention.
Some may seem uncoordinated, slow moving and sluggish. Inattentive
children also seem shy and withdrawn. Those with
impulsivity-hyperactivity may be able to pay attention, but lose focus
because they cannot control their impulses. They speak out or act
before thinking or waiting their turn; they cannot self-monitor or
self-evaluate their thoughts and actions. Others may be restless: they
fidget, squirm and flit. Impulsive-hyperactive children seem
aggressive, making peer interactions difficult.
