WHAT'S NEW

Let’s hear it for the boys! Yogi Times has entered some new territory this month with our first ever men’s issue. Through the process of putting the issue together we encountered some new and enlightening perspectives on masculinity, spirituality and being a healthy man in today’s world. The most poignant thing that came to light
as we assembled the issue was the extent to which we are all alike on the inside. Our culture likes to highlight the gulf between men and women. What we discovered was the humanity that we have in common rather than the differences between the genders.

Some things to watch for in this issue include our answer to the question: Is yoga macho enough for America’s men? You’ll get some interesting insight on this question from a hockey player turned yoga teacher. We also discuss natural ways for men to keep their prostates healthy as well as the Ayurvedic perspective on how men can handle stress and keep balance in their lives. You’ll see some chic fashion, natural men’s skincare tips and all the regular healthy lifestyle you expect in our pages. Enjoy this issue and let us know your thoughts on it. Send your letters to the editor to info@yogitimes.com.

is yoga macho enough

Is Yoga Macho Enough for America’s Men?

By Nina Zolotow

Whether you are male or female, if you have ever been to a yoga class, you’ve probably noticed how few men seem to be in the room. What’s up with that? After all, in India, yoga was practiced exclusively by men until only recently. Women in India could not study yoga until 1937 when Krishnamacharya (guru to B.K.S. Iyengar, K. Pattabhi Jois, and T.K.V. Desikachar) took on the first female yoga student ever, Indra Devi. Yet here in the US, yoga seems to be widely perceived as a feminine activity – easy, gentle, and maybe just not macho enough for the typical American guy.

San Francisco yoga teacher Jason Crandell says that he had the same image of yoga back when he was an ice hockey player and skateboarder. But after being dragged reluctantly to his first yoga class by his then-girlfriend, Jason found to his surprise that not only was yoga more physically challenging than he expected, but he was a lot less grumpy after the class than he was before it. the new man

The New Man
Reclaiming Our Masculine Identity

By Martin Hughes
Photography by Ron Hamad

“What is the measure of a man?” This is a question that men have contemplated since long before Shakespeare penned it. It is a question that still inspires curiosity and debate today. The American image of masculinity has been defined by a long lineage of icons who have been elevated by history to legendary status. They represent the pinnacle of maleness, from George Washington to John Wayne.

According to this cultural tradition, a man is expected to be strong, authoritative, stable and reliable. His domain is common sense and practicality, unfettered by the corrupting forces of sentimentality and emotional thinking. A man’s world is one of pragmatism – black and white. This is, at least, what our fathers and grandfathers were taught: that this country was founded on hard work and determination, with no room for weakness or failure.

yoga tip
It's best to practice on an empty stomach (especially don't eat a big meal 2 hours prior to class)--the body functions with a lot more ease if it is not also busy digesting food.
